Window security screens

Why fit window security screens?

Most Gold Coast homes are built for the breeze, but a window left open overnight is the easiest way into a house. Security screens let you keep that breeze without the worry.

A fixed screen sits in the window frame in front of a sliding window and stays put: you open and close the glass behind it as normal. Casement and awning windows wind outwards, so they need a hinged, openable screen fitted on the inside that swings open when you want to reach the winder or clean the glass, then locks shut. Both keep insects out as well as intruders, so you do not need a separate fly screen.

Screen and frame options.

Stainless mesh

Perforated aluminium

Diamond grille

Stainless steel mesh

A clear view from every room.

Fine 316 stainless mesh is the clearest infill we fit, so the window still looks like a window. It is our first choice for bedrooms and living areas with a view, and for homes near the water.

Best for coastal homes
Tested to AS 5039 for knife, impact and pull

Perforated aluminium

Privacy for street-facing windows.

A solid aluminium sheet punched with fine holes and powder coated to match the window frame. On a bright day it is harder to see into the room, and it will not rust near salt air.

Daytime privacy for bathrooms and front rooms
Will not rust, even close to the water

Diamond grille

A traditional grille on a budget.

An aluminium grille over fly mesh, the look many older Gold Coast homes already have. It deters a casual intruder at a lower price than mesh, though it is busier to look through and it is not a tested security screen.

Sliding windows

Fixed screen

A fixed screen in the window frame is the simplest and strongest choice. You slide the glass behind it as normal.

Casement and awning

Hinged openable screen

Fitted on the inside with a lock, so you can open it to reach the winder, clean the glass or get out in an emergency.

Bathrooms and street side

Perforated aluminium

Harder to see into on a bright day, with the same tested strength as stainless mesh.

Built to stop. Made to disappear.

A window screen is only as strong as the way it is fixed. Here is what goes into every one we build.

Marine-grade 316 stainless mesh

The mesh does the real work. Woven 316 stainless steel resists knives, impact and salt air, yet it is fine enough that the view and the breeze come straight through.

Material

316 stainless steel

Fixing

Screw-clamped into the frame, never glued

Best for

Bedrooms and coastal homes

Extruded aluminium frame

A slim but heavy-section aluminium frame sits inside the window reveal or on the window frame, powder coated to match so it disappears into the window.

Material

6063 extruded aluminium

Finish

Powder coated in 24 standard colours

Best for

Every window, made to the millimetre

Tamper-resistant fixing

Fixed screens are screwed into the window frame with tamper-resistant screws, so they cannot be undone from outside with an ordinary screwdriver.

Tamper-resistant, stainless

Fixed into

Window frame or reveal

Best for

Sliding and fixed-glass windows

Hinges and a keyed lock

Openable screens hang on concealed hinges on the inside and close onto a keyed lock. Keep the key near the window so the screen can be opened quickly if you need to get out.

Inside the room, concealed

Lock

Keyed, one per screen

Casement and awning windows

What it costs and why.

Most fixed window security screens we install cost between $290 and $620 per window fitted, and openable screens between $380 and $750. Four things decide where yours land.

Read the price guide

01

Size of the window

Larger windows need more mesh and may need a mullion to split the screen.

02

Mesh or infill

316 stainless costs more than perforated aluminium, and earns it near the coast.

03

Fixed or openable

Hinged screens add hinges, a lock and more frame than a fixed screen.

04

Access and height

Upstairs windows with no safe access from outside can take longer to fit.

Questions about window screens.

See all questions

Do I need a fixed or an openable screen?

It depends on how the window opens. Sliding and double-hung windows take a fixed screen, because you open the glass behind it. Casement and awning windows wind outwards, so they need a hinged screen on the inside that you can open to reach the winder.

Do window security screens replace fly screens?

Yes. Stainless mesh and perforated aluminium both keep insects out, so the security screen takes the place of the fly screen in that window.

Can I get out in an emergency?

With an openable screen, yes: unlock it and swing it open. Fixed screens do not open, so we suggest at least one openable screen in each bedroom. Keep the key near the window, out of reach of small children.

Can you screen upstairs windows?

Yes. Most upstairs screens are fitted from inside the room. Where a screen has to go on from outside, we check access at the measure and allow for it in the quote.

How long does installation take?

Your screens are made two to three weeks after you accept the written quote. We fit most windows in 20 to 40 minutes each, so a whole house is often done in a day.

How do I look after them near the coast?

Rinse the mesh and frames with fresh water every few months, more often near a canal or the Broadwater. A soft brush and mild soapy water lift salt and dust without harming the powder coat.
