Diamond grille doors and screens

Diamond grille is a traditional aluminium grille fitted over fly mesh, the look many older Gold Coast homes already have. It deters a casual intruder and keeps insects out at a lower price than mesh. It is not a tested security screen, and we will always tell you where a stainless or perforated screen is the better choice.

Why choose diamond grille?

Some homes want the classic diamond pattern, and some just want a sturdier door than a fly screen without the cost of a tested security screen.

A diamond grille door or window screen gives you both. The grille is a solid aluminium pattern in a powder-coated frame, with fly mesh behind it to keep insects out. It looks right on a Queenslander or an older brick home, it stops the door being pushed in casually, and it costs less than stainless mesh or perforated aluminium. The trade-off is strength and view: the openings in the grille are larger, so the fly mesh behind it is the only thing a knife meets, and the pattern is busier to look through.

Hinged grille doors

A classic front or back door.

A hinged grille door with a triple-point lock and a self-closer, hung on your existing frame. It suits Queenslanders, older brick homes and back doors where budget matters more than a security rating.

Grille window screens

A lower-cost window screen.

Fixed grille screens for sliding windows, matched to the door. They deter a casual attempt and keep insects out, though they are not a tested security screen.

Tested security screens

When to choose mesh instead.

For a front door that faces the street, a home that is often empty or anywhere you want a tested security screen, stainless mesh or perforated aluminium is the better choice. We can quote both side by side.

A layer of fibreglass fly mesh sits behind the grille to keep insects out. It is a wear item and can be replaced on its own when it tears.

Triple-point lock

Grille doors lock at three points like our security doors: one turn of the key throws three bolts into the frame. The lock is strong; the grille is the part that limits the rating.

What it costs and why.

Diamond grille is our lowest-cost door and window screen. A grille door usually costs less than a perforated aluminium security door, which runs $650 to $990 fitted. Four things decide where yours lands.

01

Size of the opening

Larger doors and windows need a bigger grille and a stiffer frame.

02

03

Number of openings

See all questions

Is diamond grille a security screen?

Not the ones we fit. A grille deters a casual intruder, but it is not tested to AS 5039, and the larger openings leave the fly mesh behind it exposed. For a tested security screen, choose stainless mesh or perforated aluminium.

Why is diamond grille cheaper?

The grille and frame are simpler to make than a woven stainless or perforated aluminium screen, and the fly mesh behind it is a standard material. The lock and hardware are the same.

Can you replace the fly mesh behind my grille?

Yes. Torn fly mesh can be replaced without changing the grille or frame, from $140 to $320 a screen. We can fit pet mesh at the same time if the dog is the reason it tore.

Can you match an existing grille door?

Usually. We bring the colour chart to the measure and match the frame colour and pattern as closely as we can, so new window grilles sit well beside an older door.

Can I upgrade a grille door to stainless mesh?

We can re-mesh many grille door frames, but the result will not meet AS 5039, because the frame, hinges and lock were not tested with the new mesh. For a tested door, we make a new one.

How long does installation take?

Your doors and screens are made two to three weeks after you accept the written quote. A grille door takes one to two hours to fit.
