Fly screens

Fly screen windows

Window fly screens let you open the windows for the breeze without letting in flies, mosquitoes and midges. We make each one to measure in a powder-coated aluminium frame, with fibreglass, midge or pet mesh, for new homes, older homes and replacements.

Why replace your window fly screens?

Builder-supplied fly screens are often loose, bent or missing a corner by the time a home is a few years old, and a small gap is all a mosquito needs.

A made-to-measure fly screen sits square in the window frame, with a spline that keeps the mesh tight and a frame that does not bow. We measure every window, match the frame colour to your windows and choose the mesh for the room: standard fibreglass for most windows, midge mesh near the canals and wetlands, and pet mesh where a cat sits on the sill. Fly screens keep insects out, not intruders; for windows you want open at night while you sleep, ask us about security screens.

New estate homes often need fly screens replaced or added in the first year

Standard fly mesh

The clearest view through the window.

Charcoal fibreglass mesh is easy to see through, does not crease or dent, and suits most windows in the house.

Our standard mesh
Easy to re-mesh later

Midge mesh

For homes near water.

A finer weave that keeps out midges and sandflies as well as mosquitoes. It suits canal homes, the Coomera River and anywhere near wetlands, with a small loss of airflow.

When you need more

Choose a security screen instead.

A fly screen will not stop someone reaching in. For bedrooms and ground-floor windows you want open overnight, a security screen keeps insects out and intruders too.

What it costs and why.

Most window fly screens we install cost between $85 and $190 a window fitted. Four things decide where yours land.

Read the price guide

01

Size of the window

Larger windows need a heavier frame and sometimes a centre rail.

02

Mesh type

Midge and pet mesh cost a little more than standard fibreglass.

03

Number of windows

A whole house measured and fitted in one visit costs less per window.

04

Access and height

Upstairs windows with no safe access from outside take longer to fit.

Questions about window fly screens.

Send us a photo of the window from inside, and we will tell you what fits before we visit.

See all questions

Can you make fly screens for any window?

Almost any. We make fly screens for sliding, awning, casement and double-hung windows, including older windows where the original screens are no longer made.

Do I need midge mesh?

If you live near a canal, the river or wetlands and get midges or sandflies at dusk, yes. Standard fly mesh stops mosquitoes but midges can get through it.

Can you re-mesh my existing screens?

Often, if the frame is straight. Re-meshing costs $140 to $320 a screen, which can be more than a new screen for a small window, so we will tell you which is better value.

Will a fly screen stop a child falling out?

No. Fly screens are clipped in and are not built to hold weight. For upstairs bedrooms, fit a child-safe screen that is fixed to resist a push from inside.

How long does installation take?

Your screens are made two to three weeks after you accept the written quote. Most windows take 10 to 15 minutes each to fit.

How do I clean them?

Lift clip-in screens out and rinse them with a hose, or brush and vacuum fixed screens in place. Mild soapy water lifts salt and dust without harming the frame.
