Window security screens on the Gold Coast

We make and install window security screens for Gold Coast homes: fixed screens, openable screens for casement and awning windows, sliding window screens and child-safe screens for upstairs rooms. Every screen is measured by our team, tested to AS 5039 and installed to AS 5040, with a 10 year warranty and a free written quote.

Types of window screens we install.

Most Gold Coast homes need two or three of these, depending on how each window opens and how high it sits. Every screen is made to measure in stainless mesh or perforated aluminium and fitted by our own team.

Stainless steel mesh

A clear view from the bed.

Woven 316 stainless steel is the clearest infill we fit, so the view and the breeze come through a bedroom window almost as if nothing were there. It is our first choice for windows that frame a view or face the water, and it handles salt air with a fresh-water rinse every few months.

Perforated aluminium

Privacy for street-facing rooms.

A solid aluminium sheet punched with fine holes and powder coated to match your window frames. From the street it reads as a solid panel during the day, so it suits bedrooms and bathrooms that face the footpath, and it softens the glare on a west-facing wall.

Diamond grille

A traditional grille for older homes.

An aluminium grille over fly mesh, the screen many Queenslanders already have. It deters a casual intruder and keeps insects out at a lower price than mesh. It is not a tested security screen, so we suggest it for windows that are hard to reach rather than ground-floor bedrooms.

Bushfire and ember screens

For homes on the hinterland edge.

Homes in a bushfire-prone area are built to a BAL rating under AS 3959, and openable windows need ember protection with an aperture of 2 mm or less. Stainless mesh can do that job as well as security, so one screen covers both. We check the rating on your BAL report before we quote.

Stainless steel mesh

316 marine-grade woven mesh. The clearest view and best airflow for bedrooms, living rooms and windows near the water.

Child-safe screens

Any of the tested infills, fixed with screws that cannot be undone by hand, so a bedroom window can stay open safely.

Child-safe screens

Built to Australian Standards and the NCC.

A window screen has two jobs: keeping people out and, upstairs, keeping children in. Australian Standards cover the first and the National Construction Code covers the second.

How the standards work

AS 5039

How the screen is made

The standard for security screen doors and window grilles. It sets the materials and performance for the mesh, the frame and the way the infill is held in it.

AS 5040

How the screen is fitted

The standard for installing them. It covers the fixings and the gaps around the screen, so a strong screen cannot be levered off a window frame.

NCC

The openable-window rule

In a bedroom where the floor is 2 m or more above the ground outside, an openable window with a sill below 1.7 m must open no more than 125 mm or be protected by a screen that resists a 250 N push.

Fixings, locks and colours.

Fixed screens are held with tamper-resistant screws that cannot be undone from outside, and openable screens close with a keyed lock.

On casement and awning windows we hinge the screen so you can still reach the winder, and lock it with a key that can be matched to your security doors. Where a bedroom screen also needs to work as an escape route, we fit a release that opens from inside in one movement. Frames are powder coated to match your window frames, so the screen sits back into the facade.

The warranty covers faults in materials and workmanship. It does not cover damage from impact, storms or harsh cleaning products, and homes near the water should follow the care notes we leave with the screens.

Price

What affects the price.

Every screen is made to measure, so the price comes from your windows rather than a catalogue. A fixed window screen typically sits between $290 and $620 installed, and an openable or child-safe screen between $380 and $750. Four things move it most.

01

Size of the window

Wide and tall windows need more mesh and a stiffer frame.

02

Mesh or infill

Stainless mesh costs more than perforated aluminium or diamond grille.

03

Fixed or openable

Hinges, locks and escape releases add parts and fitting time.

04

Access

Second-storey windows may need scaffold or a ladder platform.

See all questions

Do window security screens meet Australian Standards?

The window screens we install are tested to AS 5039 and fitted to AS 5040. A fly screen or a grille that has not been tested is not a security screen, however solid it looks. We hand over the product details with your screens.

What does the NCC say about upstairs windows?

Under the National Construction Code, a bedroom window where the floor is 2 m or more above the ground outside, with a sill lower than 1.7 m, must open no more than 125 mm or be protected by a screen that resists a 250 N push. Other rooms have a similar rule from 4 m. It applies to new homes and approved renovations, and it is good practice in any home with young children.

Can I still open the window behind a fixed screen?

Yes, on sliding and double-hung windows the screen sits outside the glass and the window opens as normal behind it. On casement and awning windows that push outwards, we fit a hinged screen instead so the window can swing open.

Can I get out through a security screen in a fire?

A fixed screen cannot be opened from inside, so for bedrooms with one window we suggest an escape screen. It locks against entry from outside and opens from inside with one movement, without a key.

Stainless mesh or perforated aluminium for windows?

Stainless mesh gives the clearest view and the best airflow, so it suits bedrooms and living rooms. Perforated aluminium adds daytime privacy and cuts glare, so it suits bathrooms and windows that face the street. Many homes use both.

Do window screens work as fly screens?

Yes. The mesh and perforated aluminium we fit are fine enough to keep out flies and mosquitoes, so the security screen replaces the fly screen on that window. For midges near the canals, ask us about a finer secondary mesh.

How long does it take to fit window screens?

Screens are made two to three weeks after you accept the quote. Fitting takes 20 to 40 minutes per window, so most homes are done in a day.

Do I need body corporate approval for window screens?

If you live in a townhouse or unit, the body corporate usually has rules about screens on windows that face common areas or the street. We can supply a written quote, product details and colour information for your application.
