316 stainless steel mesh screens

Woven 316 stainless steel mesh is the strongest and clearest infill we fit. We use it in security doors and window screens made to measure for Gold Coast homes, tested to AS 5039, installed to AS 5040 and backed by a 10 year warranty on mesh and frame.

Why choose 316 stainless mesh?

Most people choose a security screen for strength, then live with it for the view. Stainless mesh is the infill that gives up the least of either.

The mesh is woven from fine stainless steel wire and clamped into a heavy aluminium frame, so it resists knives, impact and a pull from outside while you look straight through it to the garden. Airflow is close to an open window and it keeps insects out, so it replaces the fly screen. We use 316 grade rather than 304 because it holds up far better to salt air, which matters within a few kilometres of the Broadwater, the canals and the beach.

Hinged security doors

A clear view from the front door.

Front, back and laundry doors with stainless mesh, a triple-point lock and a self-closer. The timber door stands open behind it and the breeze runs down the hallway.

Sliding security doors

Leave the patio slider open.

Sliding and stacker screens on their own track in front of the glass. Fine mesh keeps the view to the pool and the garden, and the door glides with one hand.

Window security screens

Sleep with the windows open.

Fixed screens for sliding windows and hinged screens for casement and awning windows. The mesh is fine enough that the window still looks like a window.

A stainless screen is a system: mesh, clamp, frame and finish. Here is what each part does.

Woven 316 stainless wire

Fine stainless wire is woven into a tight, even mesh. The weave is what resists a knife or a push, and the fine wire is what keeps the view so clear.

Coastal and canal homes

Screw-clamped, never glued

The mesh edge is clamped into the frame with screws along every side. Glued mesh can let go with heat and age; a screw clamp holds it under load for the life of the screen.

Extruded aluminium frame

A heavy-section aluminium frame carries the load from the mesh to the hinges, lock or fixings. Corners are mitred and screwed, made to the millimetre for each opening.

Powder-coated mesh and frame

What it costs and why.

Stainless mesh is usually the highest-cost infill we fit. A hinged stainless door typically costs $790 to $1,250 fitted, a sliding door $950 to $1,650 and a fixed window screen $290 to $620. Four things decide where yours lands.

See all questions

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless?

316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which makes it far more resistant to salt and chlorine than 304. On the Gold Coast, where salt air reaches well inland, we fit 316 as standard.

Will stainless mesh rust near the coast?

316 stainless is marine grade, but salt can still leave tea staining on any metal if it is never rinsed. A fresh-water rinse every few months, more often on a canal or near the Broadwater, keeps it looking new and protects your warranty.

Can I see through it at night?

From inside, the view is clear in daylight and at night. From outside, a lit room is easier to see into after dark, so add a blind where you want privacy in the evening.

Is stainless mesh pet proof?

It stands up to claws, paws and noses far better than fly screen, and a dog or cat will not tear it. A determined dog can still mark the powder coat, so a solid kick panel at the base is worth it for a dog that jumps at the door.

Can you put stainless mesh in my old screen frames?

We can re-mesh many old frames with stainless, from $140 to $320 a screen. A re-meshed screen will not meet AS 5039 on its own, though, because the frame, hinges and lock were not tested with the new mesh.

How long does installation take?

Your screens are made two to three weeks after you accept the written quote. A door takes one to three hours to fit and most windows 20 to 40 minutes each.
