Upper Coomera · child-safe screens for upstairs bedrooms

Window security screens

Child-safe window screens

A child-safe window screen lets an upstairs window open fully for the breeze while stopping a child from falling through it. We make each one to measure in 316 stainless mesh or perforated aluminium, fixed so it cannot be pushed out or removed without a tool, and back it with a 10 year warranty.

Why fit child-safe window screens?

A fly screen is not built to hold a child’s weight. Leaning on one is enough to push it out of the window frame, which is how many window falls happen.

A child-safe screen is a security screen fixed into the window frame so it resists a push from inside, not just a forced entry from outside. The window behind it can open as far as it goes, so the room still gets the breeze, and there is no need for a winder restrictor that keeps the window almost shut. For bedrooms we usually suggest an openable screen with a keyed lock, so adults can still open it in an emergency while small children cannot.

Stainless steel mesh

Strong enough to lean on.

Woven 316 stainless mesh is clamped into a heavy aluminium frame, so it holds when a child leans or pushes on it. It is fine enough that the view and the breeze come straight through.

The clearest view we fit

Perforated aluminium

Tough and a little more private.

A solid aluminium sheet punched with fine holes, powder coated to match the window frame. Small fingers cannot pull at it, and it makes a street-facing bedroom harder to see into on a bright day.

Fixed or openable

A screen that suits each window.

Sliding windows take a fixed screen in the window frame. Casement and awning windows need a hinged screen on the inside, closed with a keyed lock so a child cannot open it but an adult can.

Upstairs bedrooms

Openable screen with a keyed lock

The window opens fully, the screen stays locked, and an adult can open it quickly in an emergency.

Sliding windows

Fixed stainless mesh screen

The simplest and strongest option. The glass slides behind it and the screen never moves.

Play rooms and stairs

Perforated aluminium

Stands up to toys, knocks and fingers, and will not tear the way fly mesh does.

Built to hold. Made to open when you need it.

A child-safe screen has to resist a push from inside, not just a forced entry from outside. Here is what goes into every one we build.

Marine-grade 316 stainless mesh

Woven 316 stainless steel holds its shape when a child leans on it, and it will not tear or bulge out of the frame the way fly mesh can.

Fixing

Screw-clamped into the frame, never glued

Bedrooms and play rooms

Extruded aluminium frame

A heavy-section aluminium frame spreads the load from the mesh to the fixings, so a push in the middle of the screen does not bow it out of the window.

What it costs and why.

Most child-safe and openable window screens we install cost between $380 and $750 per window fitted. Fixed screens for sliding windows cost less, from $290. Four things decide where yours land.

Read the price guide

01

Size of the window

Larger windows need more mesh and may need a mullion to split the screen.

02

Mesh or infill

316 stainless costs more than perforated aluminium.

03

Fixed or openable

Hinged screens add hinges, a keyed lock and more frame than a fixed screen.

04

Access and height

Upstairs windows with no safe access from outside can take longer to fit.

Does the NCC require child-safe windows?

For some bedroom windows, yes. The National Construction Code requires openable bedroom windows that sit well above the ground outside to stop a child falling through, either by limiting how far the window opens or by fitting a screen that resists an outward push. Your builder or certifier confirms what applies to your home.

Is a fly screen enough?

No. A fly screen is clipped into the window frame and is not built to hold weight, so a child leaning on it can push it out. A child-safe screen is a security screen fixed so it resists that push.

Can we still get out in a fire?

Yes, with an openable screen. It closes onto a keyed lock that an adult can open in seconds. Keep the key near the window, out of a small child’s reach, and include it in your family’s fire plan.

Can I keep my window winder restrictors?

You can, but you may not need them once a child-safe screen is fitted, because the screen stops the fall rather than the window. Many families remove them so the window can open fully for the breeze.

How long does installation take?

Your screens are made two to three weeks after you accept the written quote. Most windows are fitted from inside the room in 20 to 40 minutes each.

Do child-safe screens keep insects out?

Yes. Stainless mesh and perforated aluminium both keep insects out, so the screen replaces the fly screen in that window.
