Fly screens

Fly screen doors

A fly screen door lets the breeze through the front, back or patio door while keeping flies and mosquitoes out. We make hinged and sliding fly screen doors to measure in powder-coated aluminium frames, with fibreglass, pet or aluminium mesh, and fit them with our own crew.

Why fit a fly screen door?

Some doors need security and some just need to keep the insects out. For a back door to a fenced yard or a slider off an upstairs balcony, a fly screen door is often all you need.

It costs a fraction of a security door, it is light to open and close, and a made-to-measure frame sits square in the opening so there are no gaps for mosquitoes at dusk. Hinged doors hang on the existing frame and close on a latch; sliding doors run on their own track in front of the glass. A fly screen door is not a security door, so where you want to leave a door open and unattended, we will suggest a security door instead.

Fibreglass mesh

Standard fly mesh

Light, clear and easy to replace.

Charcoal fibreglass mesh is our standard fly mesh. It is easy to see through, does not crease or dent, and can be replaced on its own when it wears out.

Pet mesh

Stands up to claws and paws.

A heavier coated polyester mesh that resists scratching and tearing far better than fibreglass. It suits back doors where the dog or cat waits to be let in.

When you need more

Choose a security door instead.

If the door will be left open while you are out or asleep, a fly screen is not enough. A security door in stainless mesh or perforated aluminium keeps insects out too.

A security door instead

For the door you want open while you are home or away, a security door is the better choice.

Read the price guide

01

Size of the opening

Taller and wider doors need a heavier frame and a cross rail.

02

Hinged or sliding

Sliding doors add a track and rollers to the frame and mesh.

03

Mesh type

Pet mesh costs a little more than standard fibreglass mesh.

04

Your existing frame

Uneven sills or a frame out of square may need packing or a new track.

See all questions

Is a fly screen door a security door?

No. A fly screen door keeps insects out but is not built or tested to resist a forced entry. If you want to leave the door open while you are out or asleep, choose a security door, which keeps insects out as well.

Hinged or sliding?

It depends on the door behind it. A hinged timber or glass door takes a hinged fly door; a sliding glass door takes a sliding fly door on its own track.

Can you replace just the mesh?

Yes. Torn or tired mesh can be replaced without a new door, from $140 to $320 a screen, whoever made it.

Can you add a pet door?

Yes. Pet doors fit neatly into fly screen doors, and pet mesh around them stands up to claws. It is the option we suggest instead of cutting a pet door into a security door.

How long does installation take?

Your door is made two to three weeks after you accept the written quote, and fitting usually takes about an hour.

How do I look after it?

Brush or vacuum the mesh every few months, wipe the frame with mild soapy water, and keep the track of a sliding door free of grit so the rollers run freely.
