Security doors

French and double security doors

French and double security doors let you open both leaves of a wide doorway to the deck or the garden while the house stays locked. We make each pair to measure in 316 stainless mesh or perforated aluminium, with flush bolts so both leaves lock as one, and back them with a 10 year warranty.

Why choose French security doors?

French doors are made to be opened wide, but most stay shut through summer because there is nothing between the room and the yard once they are open.

A matched pair of security doors fixes that. The active leaf opens on a triple-point lock like a normal front door, and the second leaf is held by flush bolts at the top and bottom, so the pair locks as one panel. When you want the full opening for a party or moving furniture, slide the bolts and swing both leaves back. Each leaf is made to the millimetre, so the meeting stile lines up with your timber or glass doors behind it.

Stainless mesh

Perforated aluminium

Privacy mesh

Stainless steel mesh

Keep the view through both leaves.

Woven 316 stainless mesh is fine enough that a wide pair of doors still reads as glass from inside. It is our first choice for French doors that open to a view, a pool or the water.

316 marine grade for coastal homes
Tested to AS 5039 for knife, impact and pull

Perforated aluminium

Privacy for a street-side pair.

A solid aluminium sheet punched with fine holes and powder coated to match. It makes a wide opening harder to see into on a bright day and takes knocks from kids, prams and outdoor furniture.

Daytime privacy for street-facing doors
Will not rust, even close to the water

Privacy mesh

See out while less is seen in.

Mesh with a one-way effect in daylight, so you see the garden clearly while neighbours see less of the room. It suits French doors that face a shared fence or a neighbour’s deck.

Keeps the breeze and the view out

316 stainless steel mesh

Marine grade, so salt air will not eat it, as long as it gets a fresh-water rinse every few months.

Older homes

Stainless mesh in a matched colour

A slim frame powder coated to match the timber doors keeps a heritage entry looking original.

Marine-grade 316 stainless mesh

The mesh does the real work. Woven 316 stainless steel resists knives, impact and salt air, and both leaves are cut from the same run so the weave lines up across the pair.

Fixing

Screw-clamped into the frame, never glued

Coastal and canal homes

Extruded aluminium frames

Each leaf has its own heavy-section frame, and the meeting stiles overlap so there is no gap to lever at. Every frame is powder coated to match your doors and trims.

Material

6063 extruded aluminium

Finish

Powder coated in 24 standard colours

Best for

Wide openings, made to the millimetre

Triple-point lock on the active leaf

A key turns three bolts at once into the passive leaf, so the pair cannot be pulled apart at the middle. The cylinder can be keyed alike to your front door.

Locking

Three-point, key and snib

Cylinder

Keyed alike on request

Best for

French doors used every day

Flush bolts on the passive leaf

Two flush bolts hold the second leaf into the head and the sill. Slide them back and both leaves swing open for the full width of the doorway.

Hinges

What it costs and why.

Most French and double security doors we install cost between $1,600 and $2,600 for the pair, fitted. Four things decide where yours lands.

Read the price guide

01

Width and height

Taller leaves need a stiffer frame and a fourth hinge on each side.

02

Mesh or infill

316 stainless costs more than perforated aluminium, and earns it near the coast.

03

Lock and bolts

Keyed-alike cylinders and heavier bolts add a little to the price.

04

Your existing frame

Older frames and uneven sills can need packing or a sub-frame.

Four steps to a wide-open doorway.

Questions about double doors.

Send us a photo of the doorway with both doors open, and we will tell you what fits before we visit.

See all questions

Can both leaves open at once?

Yes. The active leaf opens like a normal door, and the passive leaf opens once you slide back its flush bolts. With both open you get the full width of the doorway.

Do French security doors open in or out?

Out, in almost every case, so they do not clash with the timber or glass doors behind them. We check the swing at the measure, allowing for steps, posts and outdoor furniture.

Is a pair as secure as a single door?

It is when it is built and fitted properly. The meeting stiles overlap, the lock throws three bolts into the passive leaf, and the flush bolts hold that leaf into the head and sill, so the pair cannot be pulled apart at the middle.

Can you fit a pair to an old or uneven frame?

Usually. Older frames are often out of square, so we measure each leaf separately and pack or sub-frame where needed. We explain any extra work before we quote.

How long does installation take?

Your doors are made two to three weeks after you accept the written quote. Fitting a pair usually takes two to three hours.

How do I look after them near the coast?

Rinse the mesh and frames with fresh water every few months, more often near a canal or the Broadwater. Keep the lock and bolts working with a dry lubricant rather than oil.
